IJS SPRING 2017 LECTURE SERIES
BOOK LAUNCH
Wednesday February 8th
Carlotta Ferrara
degli Uberti
Introduced
by
François
Guesnet (UCL)
The creation of an Italian nation-state introduced new problems and new opportunities for its
citizens. What did it mean for the Jews? This lecture discusses the Italian-Jewish minority from the unification of the country to the end of the First World War. How could members of the minority combine and redefine Jewishness and Italian-ness in a radically
new political and legal framework? Key concepts such as family, religion, nation, assimilation and – later – Zionism will be described as they shift and change over time, with the self-fashioning of Italian Jewish élites seen alongside the evolution of the
cultural stereotypes typical of the period.
Carlotta
Ferrara degli Uberti joined UCL in 2014 as Lecturer in Italian History at
the Department of Italian, after holding post-doctoral positions at the Scuola Normale Superiore (Pisa), the Institut d’Histoire Moderne et Contemporaine (Paris), the Foundation for Contemporary Jewish Documentation (Milan) and the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute
(Brandeis University). She has published extensively on Italian Jewish history, focusing in particular on the emancipation and the integration of the minority from a cultural perspective.
