In answer to Paul’s question do you link the DBA to the subsequent monument record even though the DBA did not identify it at all and adds nothing to the understanding of the monument, No I wouldn’t though I can’t think of many occasions where this would apply.

I only link DBAs to events, in order to flag up sources of what examination has been done in an area, cursory though may have been.... but if sites visits or good examination of historical sources throws up new monuments our HER wasn’t aware of, when I create Mon records for these I would then link them to the DBA.  I certainly wouldn’t waste time linking DBAs to all the monuments they list as generally they got these from the HER in the first place.

Best wishes

Paul,

Ignoring whether DBAs should be recorded as Events at all (we rarely do), then I probably would not link the DBA Event to the Monument. We tend to now only link Events when they have contributed to the understanding of those Monuments in some way. For me the link to the Monument by the DBA would only be that they happen to be in the same area geographically and I would let the GIS show that. Otherwise I suppose you would need to link the DBA Event to all the Monuments in the area that the DBA covers just because it happens to be looking at the same area and I don't think that makes much sense.

I would be interested to see what others think (as long as it is not about the whole should a DBA be an Event debate please!).

Cheers,

Ben

Hi all,

Just after an idea of what others do in a particular situation.

If you have a DBA on a piece of land that says that there is no archaeology, but a later evaluation and excavation shows there was significant archaeology surviving (which then becomes logged as a monument), do you link the DBA to the subsequent monument record even though the DBA did not identify it at all and adds nothing to the understanding of the monument.

Thanks

Paul
