Very confused – I am aware of this document but as the yellow JCQ ICE book says it covers BTEC Firsts and BTEC Nationals I treat them as any other written exam and sit them in with the GQ students. I know the AA approval is different.   I wasn’t aware I might get inspected for BTEC Exams – though it was covered by the JCQ Inspection.  I must admit I wasn’t aware that functional skills exams weren’t covered by the ICE book but I always use the exam board admin guides to run them as they are all a bit different.  Again didn’t realise I could get inspected separately for functional skills – do each board send out their own inspetors.  We currently run variousl functional skill programmes with 3 different boards (trying to change this) so I guess we have the potential to get inspected for them all.

Oh well - if they turn up to inspect us I can’t believe we’ll be doing anything too seriously wrong and if they want to get niggly about posters inside or outside the room they can.

Subject: FW: Incident #3546204: Centre NO: 13409 Query regarding 'Instructions for Conducting External Assessments' (ICEA)

Hi all,

Hope you’ve all had a restful and peaceful break, with no family arguments, broken toys to return, etc.

I queried a detail I saw in the new Pearson ‘ICEA’ booklet (attached) which they have published to cover the new NQF BTEC exams, although it is pretty much the same as the JCQ ICE book but with far less detail.  Did I miss the email or was this document published without informing us as a community?

Essentially, they will conduct their own, separate exam inspections for these exams, and I questioned the requirement on p. 23 to put the JCQ posters up inside the room as well as outside.  For info, the posters must be put up both and outside inside the exam room for any exams that are covered by the new document.

Hope this is useful, and apologies if this is known to you already.

Regards

Subject: Incident #3546204: Centre NO: 13409 Query regarding 'Instructions for Conducting External Assessments' (ICEA)

Hi Paul,

The information below is from our Business Improvement & Regulation Team:

Please accept my apologies that we haven't responded sooner.

The ICEA document was written for the delivery of BTEC First external assessments. The centre must comply with the regulations relating to the qualification they are delivering.

If you deliver a BTEC First external assessment, then you will need to ensure that the centre comply with both the ICEA and the JCQ Instructions for Conducting Examinations (ICE) (even if they are different). If they are delivering a GCSE exam (for example) then only they only need to comply with JCQ ICE.

So, for BTEC exams, posters should be displayed inside and outside the room. For all others, they can be displayed on the outside only.

I hope that makes sense.

Kind regards,

Bernie Bell

> Dear Exams Office Support,

On page 23 of the above document, it states;

"Display Materials
The JCQ issues posters called Warning to Candidates and No Mobile Phones which you are required to display both inside and outside the room." (My colouring for emphasis).

The JCQ 'Instructions for Conducting Exams' which your ICEA book closely follows and frequently refers to does NOT now state that the above posters should be displayed inside the room - only outside.

Can you please confirm for purpose of agreement with any Pearson exam inspector that it is not necessary to display these posters inside the room? I believe this to be the case as the JCQ document would take precedence over your own document as we often run exams from other awarding organisations alongside your own.

I look forward to your speedy reply.
