The Mobile Lives Forum, a mobility research institute, is launching a new website section dedicated to presenting MA and PhD students’ work on mobility.

The Mobile Lives Forum’s research focus is on people and their lived experiences rather than solely the technical aspects of transport infrastructures. Broadly understood this categorisation gives scope for a wide range of topics and approaches examining the role of mobility in social life and its territorial and environmental implications. Through this space, we hope to give visibility to and encourage work that is in line with this agenda. 

The Mobile Lives Forum research program is based on two approaches:

• Understanding. How do we experience mobility today?
• Acting. What transition policies do we need to develop in order to move towards more desirable and sustainable mobilities?

Submissions to participate in this initiative are made through supervisors. The supervisor is invited to submit a short article written by the student as well as that student’s thesis or dissertation (details regarding the format can be found below) to the Mobile Lives Forum. A scientific committee led by Vincent Kaufmann (scientific director of the Mobile Lives Forum), will select ten articles for publication on the Forum’s website (one publication per month), and each publication will be included in the English and French editions of its newsletter (circulated to 10,000 researchers, practitioners and students). Students whose articles are featured will receive a cash prize (details below).

Practical information :

FORMAT OF THE ARTICLE TO BE SUBMITTED:

The article must be max. 900 words and must address the following five questions:

1. What is your research topic? What thesis are you defending?
2. What makes your research topic stand out?
3. If your thesis/dissertation involves empirical research, what does this consist of?
4. What is your contribution to theoretical and policy debates?
5. What questions have arisen from your research that could be addressed in the future?

• The article must be accessible to a non-academic audience. The text must be written in English or French.

• Video, photos and/or other visuals may be included in the article.

• Attach the thesis/dissertation in PDF format. This will be made available for download on the Mobile Lives Forum website. Please advise us if your work cannot be published online for any reason (i.e. embargo placed on publication) and give details.

Please include a short biography (max. 100 words) with the following information: name, date of birth, university and department, title of the master’s program (if applicable), start date of the programme and name of the supervisor.

Procedure:

HOW TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION: Submissions must be made by supervisors (consisting of an article and a dissertation/thesis). Please note that the deadline for submission is March 1, 2017.

ARTICLE: This text should be 900 words.

REMUNERATION (FOR FINALISTS): 200 euros for a master’s student and 500 euros for a young doctor.

PUBLICATION: The ten selected articles will be published over a year (one per month from May 2017 to April 2018, with no publications in July and August), and will appear on both the French and the English versions of the website. The thesis/dissertation will be available for download in PDF format, free of charge.

THE MOBILE LIVES FORUM’S SELECTION CRITERIA:

• Relevance of the subject to the themes developed and issues advocated by the Forum. See agenda http://en.forumviesmobiles.org/page/research-program-themes
• Originality and importance of the subject and its presentation
• PhDs must have been submitted and theses defended after September 1, 2013. PhD students nearing completion are also encouraged to participate. In this case applicants should submit the 900 words paper plus the introduction or an extensive summary.

CALENDAR

 – March 1, 2017: deadline for supervisors’ submission of applications (article and dissertation/thesis) to the Mobile Lives Forum.

- April 1, 2017: announcement of the texts selected for publication.

- May 9, 2017: publication of the first article.
