The VI International Seminar City, Retail and Consumption will be held between 12 and 16 September 2017 in Lisbon, under the auspices of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT) and the Centre for Geographical Studies (CEG) of the University of Lisbon.

The International Seminar City, Retail and Consumption is a privileged forum for the discussion of issues relating to retail and consumption in the urban context. With a biennial organization, through this forum, geographers, urbanists and urban planners, from Europe and Latin America, have shared research experiences in different geographical contexts and contributed to the progress of theoretical and applied knowledge in this scientific field, reflected in planning and public policies of the cities. This event discusses concepts, perspectives and methodologies, case studies are presented and the role of retail and consumption in the production, management and the livability of the contemporary city is debated. Since 2006, this seminar has had five editions: Rio de Janeiro (2006), Barcelona (2009), São Paulo (2012), Naples (2013), and Mexico City (2015).

Theme and discussion axes

The VI International Seminar’s main theme will be “Retail, Consumption and the New forms of Urban Governance”. This seminar will be organized into four axes:

1. The retail, consumption and leisure landscapes in transition: from the High Street to the virtual environments of shopping and entertainment.
2. The new entrepreneurial logic of retail and services and the challenges they pose to scientific research and urban policies.
3. Retail- and consumption-led urban regeneration and the new forms of city governance: projects, actors and processes.
4. Consumption, key element for cities competitiveness, the organization of everyday life and the creation of lifestyles and identities.
