Call for Papers: Canadian Association of Geographers 2017 May 29-June 2, 2017, York University, Toronto, Canada
Critical Geographies of Sport
Sport as a cultural activity is intimately connected to
spatial practice from the smallest levels of tactical movement on the field of
play, to tribal territorialism of fans, to global production networks of
products and players. Despite the large cultural footprint of sport, there
remains disproportionately fewer academic examinations of the subject. At a
time where players and fans are becoming increasingly critical of the practice
of sport and its relationship to society, such as recent national anthem
protests in the NFL and elsewhere, there is an opportunity for geographers to
consider sport and how it intersects with issues of race, gender, class,
labour, or urban space. This session seeks to open a conversation between
critical geographers through the medium of sport.
Abstract submissions can be made via the CAG conference website: http://cag-acg2017.ca/
Deadline for submissions is Feb. 24, 2017.
