The Wordsworth-Coleridge Association
Call for Papers
Modern Language Association Convention, New York City, January 4-7, 2018

The Wordsworth-Coleridge Association is an Allied Organization of the Modern Language Association that meets annually during the MLA Convention. Along with an annual festive lunch, the Wordsworth-Coleridge Association is allowed to propose up to two scholarly sessions. For the MLA Convention in New York City, proposals are invited for the following topic.

Word and Image in British Romanticism. Proposals for papers should examine the illustrated book and the annotated image from William Blake to George Cruikshank. Topics may include the integration of word and image in poetry and fiction, political satire and caricature, the complex relationship between literature and the fine arts, the rise of illustrated periodicals, and the history of collaboration (and discord) among writers, artists, engravers, editors, and publishers in the British Romantic period. Papers may also examine the afterlife of Romanticism in modern visual and digital media.

Submit abstracts (maximum 300 words) by March 15, 2017, to James McKusick ([log in to unmask]). The MLA requires (in addition to an abstract) a biographical statement (circa 300 words), written in the third person, including the presenter’s name, title, affiliation, final degree institution and date, scholarly interests and publications. Particularly relevant are scholarship and publications that directly relate to the proposed session topic. Please include some persuasive points about the importance, significance, and contribution of the proposed presentation and any previous work relating to the session topic. In other words, please explain why you are the ideal person to present on this topic.

All MLA program participants must be members of the Modern Language Association by April 1, 2017. For information on the MLA Convention: http://www.mla.org/convention

All subscribers to The Wordsworth Circle are members of the Wordsworth-Coleridge Association. Essays selected for presentation at MLA will be published in The Wordsworth Circle. Address all questions and comments to:
