I used the argument of pedagogy – end of and that it was vital for this and quite frankly many key titles are still only available in print format – we looked at year holdings as a compromise and invested in
a rolling stack which holds a lot but does not take up a lot of room – it is a constant fight this one size fits all mentality I have been fighting it for years here in Plymouth had to be very stubborn about but eventually the penny drops and folks understand
Hope that helps

Subject: The continued importance of print journal collections
Hello all, and a Happy New Year to you all (it’s not too late for that is it?)
At the Arts campus library at the University of Cumbria, our space is under severe duress owing to the relocation of stock from other campuses following course moves.
The current proposal is that the arts print journal collection is withdrawn and replaced wherever possible with online-only subscriptions. Obviously, this is very problematic for arts students who are compulsive browsers of materials and so gravitate towards
print materials for inspiration for studio, as opposed to students in other fields who adopt a more strategic approach to locating information. There is also the continued ‘persistence of print’ amongst art and design publishers (quite rightly) and the fact
that many of these titles are print-only and are without online alternatives.
I wondered if anyone knew of any literature, or other research evidence that substantiates these arguments, with which to arm myself in upcoming discussions? Any advice
at all would be greatly appreciated.
Best Wishes
Claire
