Webinar: Creating Top Metric Maps
21 February 2017
Online, 15.00-16.00
This is a collaborative webinar involving
Oliver O'Brien from the
Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC), at University College London.
This free webinar will unveil the process of creating “Top Metric” demographic maps, such
as the Top Industry map seen on the
CDRC Maps platform.
After discussing the key cartographic, geographic and technical considerations behind the maps, Oliver O'Brien will walk through creating such a map, from obtaining the data from the National Statistics agencies - using Microsoft Excel to pre-process
the data and identify what needs to be shown - to using QGIS to map it appropriately, accurately and fairly, and creating a final PDF map.
The webinar will also outline some other similar datasets that are available on the
CDRC Data platform, some of which have already undergone the “Top Metric” identification process.
Webinar: Bringing new forms of data to the study of cities
22 February 2017
Online, 15.00-16.00
This is a free collaborative webinar involving
Dr Daniel Arribas-Bel from the
Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC), at the University of Liverpool.
This introductory webinar is for anyone with an interest in computers, cities and data.
Participants will learn about the explosion of new sources of data about life in urban cities that is currently taking place, as well as the main opportunities and challenges this represents. Special attention will be paid to the need to re-think how we approach
data in this new landscape to be able to reap the benefits without running into (already solved) problems. These ideas will be demonstrated in practical and intuitive ways through the showcase of recent research projects by
Dr Daniel Arribas-Bel.
