Our lower value of 2.0 ug/L is the 5th percentile of a healthy adult (male and female) reference population who had no previous history of anaemia or abnormal
haematinics.
The “calculated lower reference limit” (based on the regression equation of patient comparisons of the previous Roche and new Roche folate III that were done
in our laboratory) was 1.7 ug/L.
Based on the similarity of these two values our haematologist colleagues decided that 2.0 would be a pragmatic choice.
Kind regards
Ian

This is indeed very low compared to expected values from the kit insert.
Folate reference values may be difficult to determine due to seasonal intake of vegetables etc
Most favourably folate reference (lower limit) should be the concentration where deficiency symptomes i.e. anemia etc occurs.
Is your value based on general distribution ?

Our locally derived lower ref limit in Lincolnshire, UK, is 2.0ug/L
Best wishes

Interesting discussion.
What reference values are the Roche users using for serum/plasma folate with the new reagents ?

I share the same concerns......
Folate deficiency is very rare in India. We are the champions at eating green.
However we have faced a sudden increase in folate deficiency with the folate III assay on Roche e411.This transition to the new folate assay gen has occurred recently, so I dont have much specific data on the percentage of deficiency.

Dear Roche users,
We have recently moved on to the re-standardised folate III method and have applied the reference interval suggested by Roche (3.9-26.8ng/mL).
As a consequence of this we are now reporting 33% of results below the folate reference interval.
Has anyone got an evidence based reference range for the re-standardised folate III method, based on a UK population?
We may be able to get around this using a transference equation, but it would be good to hear what reference intervals other Roche users have in place.
North Cumbrian folk aren’t the best at eating their greens but we can’t all be folate deficient!
Many thanks,
