Thank you Sheila and others
The consensus is a clupeid, Sardinops neopilchardis, the striae on the
opercular are diagnostic of this genus, of which we have only 1 species. I
shall of course investigate comparative specimens, they are commonly sold
as bait

Hi Mat, bearing in mind I am from the other end of the world, they remind
me of shad (Alosa), have you already considered that group of 'herrings'
yet?

Hi everyone

I have several fish operculars and preoperculars from a site just north of
Auckland, New Zealand, that aren’t in my reference collection or the
University’s collection. I was hoping someone might be able to help
identify them to at least family level:

They are small, and probably an inshore temperate water fish, though they
may be summer subtropical visitors – the waters of the Hauraki Gulf get
quite warm over summer.

Any help greatly appreciated

Mat
