Legal Translation: The Institute of Advanced Legal Studies and the Institute of Modern Languages Research (School of Advanced Study, University of London), are pleased to announce a new series of seminars on legal translation: This year’s seminar series kicks off on 8 December 2016 with a non-academic introduction to what legal translation is, where it happens and the risks involved: “What Exactly is Legal Translation?”. On 3 February 2017 from 3.30 pm to 5.30 pm, Dr Gianluca Pontrandolfo, from the prestigious Department of Legal Sciences, Language, Interpreting and Translation Studies at the University of Trieste (Italy) will run “A Practical Workshop on using Corpus Linguistics for Law”. Dr Pontrandolfo worked on the English translation of The Italian Code of Criminal Procedure and is also the author of a groundbreaking work on compound terms in criminal law using corpus methods. Later the same day (3 February 2017) from 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm, a leading Legal Translation Studies scholar, Professor Łucja Biel from Poland will present a practically oriented overview of major challenges and quality parameters in institutional legal translation in the European Union institutions, entitled “EU Legal Translation: Past, Present and Future?”. On 6 February 2017 from 12.30 to 2.30 pm we are extremely honoured to be hosted by the Quebec Government Office in London, Quebec House, in Pall Mall for a seminar we are organising entitled “Common Law in French and Civil Law in English – Bijuralism and Bilingualism à la canadienne!” led by Louis Beaudoin, an eminent jurilinguist from Canada who is the author of two renowned bilingual works: Expressions juridiques en un clin d’œil(Legal expressions in a wink), examining collocations in legal discourse, and Les mots du droit – Legal Thesaurus, an analogical legal lexicon.
