RGS-IBG Annual International Conference 2017

Royal Geographical Society, Kensington Gore, London

29th August – 1st September 2017

FIRST CALL FOR PAPERS

CREATIVE TECHNOLOGIES AND THE CITY

Session convenors: Rachel Granger (Leicester Castle Business School) and Tracy Harwood (Institute of Creative Technologies, DMU)

Session Abstract:

Whilst there is broad agreement that creative technologies, broadly defined, have the capacity to transform our cities, there is far less agreement about what this might mean for individual cities. In the Global South for example, there are still concerns about access to digital connectivity for most of the population, whilst in other parts of the world, creative technologies are ushering in a period of reflection and change about what our cities mean, how they should be designed, and the roles that they play. Creative technologies have the capacity to transpose and transform traditional cities into new digital spaces, which are spatially and digitally literate and also conducive environments, but at the same time risk creating dual societies, creating hyper-individualism within broader cybercities, and even un-anchoring urban architecture within the broader cityscape. In human geographical terms, this might raise issues about a city’s identity and economic and social role, as well as raising issues about a city’s morphology, social cohesion, segregation and even broader notions of economic and social injustice or dispossessions.

In this lively session, comprising 3 traditional paper presentation slots, followed by an interactive panel session, we are looking for paper, film and any aspect of research contributions, which address but are not limited to the following themes:

§  Planning, design and the cityscape in a new digital world

§  Digitising the Physical

§  Reality and the City – what reality means in virtual environments with VR, AR and projected mapping

§  Wearable Games - the role of the city as a leisure space

§  Interactions in the Cityscape – how citizens interact with technologically interactive pieces, with new age public art, and with new communication technologies

§  SMART Cities – smart economies, smart buildings, and digitally literate spaces

§  Intercommunication and the Internet of Things

§  Creative technologies and new possibilities for culture

§  Heritage and Creative Technologies – how heritage, identity, and local intrinsic value is altered and retained through creative technologies

Please email proposals (title, 200-250 Abstract) or queries to Rachel Granger ([log in to unmask]) or Tracy Harwood ([log in to unmask]). The deadline for abstracts is Friday 3rd February 2017. The format of the session will be the presentation of 3 selected papers/films each lasting 15-20 minutes, followed by a panel discussion.
