PhD position in Physical Chemistry

The Science Institute

University of Iceland

Applications are invited for a PhD position in Physical Chemistry at the Science Institute, University of Iceland, for the project: Controlled electron induced cross-linking of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) for carbon membrane production and functionalization.

The PhD position is is a full time position for three years and is financed by the University of Iceland Research Fund. Supervisor is Dr. Oddur Ingólfsson, Professor in Physical Chemistry at the Faculty of Physical Sciences.

The project focuses on low energy electron induced dissociation of modified precursor molecules for carbon nano-membrane production (CNM) from self-assembled monolayer (SAMs). In this context we seek to design precursor molecules in such a way that site selectivity may be achieved in cross linking these SAMs for the production of CNMs, and at the same time we seek to enhance the efficiency of the cross linking process.

The project is a collaboration between Prof. Ingólfsson at the University of Iceland that will supervise and provide all facilities for studies of electron interaction with the respective monomer units in the gas phase, and Prof. Gölzhauser from Universität Bielefeld that will supervise and provide the facilities and expertise needed for the CNM production and characterization. Prof. Terfort at the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt will supply the facilities, expertise and man-power needed to synthesize the compounds to be studied.

The successful candidate is expected to spend about 2/3 of the duration of this process at the Science Institute of the University of Iceland, in Reykjavík, Iceland and about 1/3 at the Universität Bielefeld, in Germany.

 Qualifications

We seek a highly motivated student with a M.Sc. degree in Chemistry, Physics or related fields. Experience with HV and/or UHV experimental techniques and charge particle optics are preferable. Good English writing and speaking skills are required.

For further information regarding this position contact: Prof. Oddur Ingólfsson, [log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>.

 The application shall include:

      I. Cover Letter listing the applicants interest on the project

    II. Curriculum Vitae

III. Copies of university diplomas (B.Sc. and M.Sc.) with clear indication of subjects and grade classification

IV. List of publication and presentations (also in preparation)

     V. Names and contact information for 2-3 individuals that can provide references

All applications will be acknowledged and applicants will be informed about the appointment when a decision has been taken. Appointments to the University of Iceland do take into account the Equal Rights Project of the University of Iceland.
Salary is according to the wage contract by the minister of finance and appropriate trade union.
