Thanks to all of those who responded regarding the alternative GIS providers.

We had the presentations on Friday and all of the browser-based options were actually quite impressive. None of the suppliers made much of an effort with their desk top offerings and none of them used the very large HER and NMP datasets I provided as test information......

So we shall see what is decided. If anyone wants more info on which suppliers we met let me know off list.

Cheers
Tim

Just to note, for those who use HBSMR and haven't been at recent User Group meetings, that HBSMR version 5 will provide full integration with QGIS as an alternative to MapInfo or ArcGIS. You can even mix platforms, with different users having different GIS, or even one user having the choice of which GIS to open.
Best wishes
Crispin

Thanks Ben - I am just about to listen to cadcorp's presentation. Just had a QGIS-based one which seemed good.

Here in Warwickshire County Council we contracted CadCorp to built a corporate GIS system, they did (eventually) and it was rubbish, so after a few years it was scrapped and our internal GIS team built our own using HERON (open source sort of web-mapping thing http://heron-mc.org/) and it is pretty good, we call it COMPASS but that is just our name.
An example of it in action as an external site can be seen here: http://maps.warwickshire.gov.uk/historical/

Our Ecology team used to use MapInfo bu now mainly use QGIS and say it is fantastic.

We use MapInfo for the HER but are looking to switch (in a phased way) to QGIS.

Other parts of the County Council here also use ESRI and are very happy with it.

Thanks James.

I expect a map management system is what most users here need so I think it will boil down to whether some of us (ie us!) are allowed to keep ESRI.

Cadcorp is our corporate GIS though for the HER we use ArcGIS. There may be a more capable version around but the implementation we have is effectively a map management system, and I certainly have never found it intuitive or easy to use. I would take some convincing that it was suitable for an HER.

Hi,

Tyne & Wear Archaeology Service (I work there too) were recently forced to change from ArcGIS to QGIS (using Essen version at the minute). After a few teething difficulties I now prefer it to ESRI. We have a bespoke system at T&W so the GIS and HER are not linked but the QGIS has certainly made the linking of the 2 systems easier/quicker in my opinion. It also has some nice little plug-ins as you will be aware. At York we are using ESRI (with HBSMR) which is fine but I miss the little extras that QGIS has.
No experience on the others - but thought others may be interested in what HERs are using in general.

Subject: Alternative GIS providers

Hi
I am just about to sit through a day of what is wonderfully called 'soft market testing' of alternative GIS suppliers. We have Astun (who supply a version of QGIS), Cadcorp and Statmap. ESRI are coming as well to explain why we should continue with them but I am skipping out of that one. I have no experience of any of these other than the raw, unpackaged version of QGIS - does anyone in HER world have any experience and or comments on the others?

Cheers
Tim
