Hi,

 

Tyne & Wear Archaeology Service (I work there too) were recently forced to change from ArcGIS to QGIS (using Essen version at the minute). After a few teething difficulties I now prefer it to ESRI. We have a bespoke system at T&W so the GIS and HER are not linked but the QGIS has certainly made the linking of the 2 systems easier/quicker in my opinion. It also has some nice little plug-ins as you will be aware. At York we are using ESRI (with HBSMR) which is fine but I miss the little extras that QGIS has.

No experience on the others – but thought others may be interested in what HERs are using in general.

Hi

I am just about to sit through a day of what is wonderfully called ‘soft market testing’ of alternative GIS suppliers. We have Astun (who supply a version of QGIS), Cadcorp and Statmap. ESRI are coming as well to explain why we should continue with them but I am skipping out of that one. I have no experience of any of these other than the raw, unpackaged version of QGIS – does anyone in HER world have any experience and or comments on the others?
