Expertise in nothing, but a little bit of knowledge about almost everything! That’s how we roll in Stroud...

Anyway, the Bayonet has now been successfully rehomed – thanks all,

Goodness how impressive. Stroud’s a great place, but I would never haver looked there for expertise in nineteenth century French materiel!

Good Morning all,

Does anyone out there have a use for an 1876 Usine de Steyr bayonet, for set dressing, accessioning or any other use? I have a potential donor who is looking to place her father’s bayonet somewhere safe – she doesn’t really mind where it goes, or what for – she just doesn’t want it in her house any more!

It is a sword style bayonet, of a type used by the French army with the Model 1874 "Gras" Infantry Rifle. It was also in service in Greece, Chile, Monaco and Vietnam amongst other places. It has an oak and brass handle.

This particular piece has no provenance beyond having belonged to the donor’s father. The bayonet itself is in pretty good condition, the scabbard has some rusting. Pictures attached.

Thanks

Alexia
