Chris

I don’t suppose anyone would consider a full time post for someone aged 75 (76 in December) but my wife and I, who have lived in France since 1994, are contemplating a return to UK, partly to be nearer elderly relatives, most probably in or near Scarborough (where I lived from 1947 to 1963 and where my brother still lives).

However, I would be interested in exploring the possibility of working in some capacity with your Skills Team, specialising in SPSS and the analysis of data from questionnaire surveys as per the self-teaching course Survey Analysis Workshop (SPSS) on my website Journeys in Survey Research.   The course is based on post- and under-graduate programmes I developed and taught at the then Polytechnic of North London from 1976 until I (early) retired in 1992.   At least five of my then undergraduates now hold full Professorial Chairs in UK universities and many of the postgraduates now hold senior research positions.

I could also contribute to the development of learning materials along the lines proposed by JISC and ESRC (Q-step) in particular teaching data sets based on major surveys such as the British Social Attitudes Survey (BSAS) and the European Social Survey (ESS) on which I am already working.

My substantive research interests (since 1970) in Subjective Social Indicators (Quality of Life) may also be of interest to research programmes in social equality and psychological well-being.  You can check out my credentials on About the author.

Everything on my site is available for free download.

Regards

John

Subject: Research Services Adviser post at University of Hull

** Apologies for cross-posting **

The University Library for the University of Hull operates from the Brynmor Jones Library on the University’s Hull campus and the Hull History Centre in the City Centre.  Within the Library, the Information Services Group (ISG) is based on the Hull campus and provides support to all parts of the University.  The Group comprises the Collections Team, which is focused on acquisition and delivery of library resources, and the Research Services Team, which has a focus on the delivery of services for the management of resources generated through the research activity of the University.  Key in this area is support for open access, research data management, bibliometrics and research resource discovery: the Library also has a key role in the management of research outputs through the new research information system, Worktribe.  This is an exciting time for the University Library, working with the completely re-developed Brynmor Jones Library.

The Research Services Adviser will be responsible for the development and operation of information services related to the research activity of the University, liaising with academic staff and professional service colleagues in the ICT Directorate (ICTD), Research and Enterprise Office (REO) and Strategic Development Unit (SDU) to define needs and how the Library can meet these. The post-holder will manage and lead the team responsible for delivering research and metadata services, comprising a Research Officer and three Metadata Officers.  The post-holder will also take responsibility for the management of digital collections within the Hydra digital repository and copyright and licensing matters related to research.

The development of research is a key strategic area for the University and the Adviser will need to ensure that all services meet strategic needs as well as take account of wider sector developments.  The post-holder will be expected to play a key role in promoting and raising awareness of HE sector developments in the research support areas covered and will be expected to contribute to the overall management and leadership of the University Library.
