The Department of Chemistry at The University of Texas Rio Grande valley invites applications for Department Chair (Job Vacancy FRGV0541). This is a tenured position at the rank of full Professor. A Ph.D. in Chemistry is required. The department chair is a key leadership position within the college that reports to the dean, and is expected to drive the department’s research and educational programs with initiatives for supporting faculty, staff and students.

UTRGV is the latest addition (2015) to the University of Texas System formed with the merger between University of Texas Pan American and University of Texas at Brownsville with the mandate to create a premier research university in the South Texas Region.

The Department of Chemistry currently has 21 tenured/tenure-track faculty members and 10 lecturers distributed over its two main campuses in Brownsville and Edinburg. The department has strong research programs in computational chemistry, chemical reaction dynamics, quantum chemistry, spectroscopy and materials science. The department offers an undergraduate degree in Chemistry and a Master of Science in Chemistry. Additional information about the department can be obtained at http://www.utrgv.edu/chemistry.

The department chair, in close collaboration with the dean of the College of Sciences and members of the college leadership team, is expected to lead the faculty, staff and students in developing, managing and administering all departmental programs and activities. In addition to administrative duties, this position provides opportunities for the successful candidate to develop his/her own externally-funded research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and participate in the mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.
