Dear Mersenne subscribers

Another polite reminder about the etiquette for Mersenne  - this is not a list for promoting commercial publications.

See below for the email sent in June this year.

Subject: Message from Mersenne managers about list etiquette

Dear Mersenne subscribers,

This is just a gentle reminder from the list managers of one aspect of Mersenne etiquette.

We welcome notifications of events, opportunities and open-access resources pertaining to the History of Science, Technology and Medicine.

Mersenne is not, however, intended to be used by list-members to advertise their own commercial ventures e.g. recently published books.

Publishers’ websites, social media and personal communications are readily used for that sort of promotional purpose.

We do, however, welcome information about symposia on new books, (free) public book launch events, and requests for reviewers of recently published books.

While this etiquette may differ from those of other e-lists, we hope that Mersenne subscribers will uphold our approach so that we can maintain the quality and utility of this list’s services to the HSTM community.

NB this etiquette is in line with the JISC acceptable use policy: https://community.jisc.ac.uk/library/acceptable-use-policy  which specifies that one unacceptable form of list usage is:

14. Creation  or  transmission  of  unsolicited  bulk  or  marketing  material  to  users  of  networked facilities or services, save where that material is embedded within, or is otherwise part of, a service to which the user or their User Organisation has chosen to subscribe.

Best wishes

The Mersenne List Managers (Jon Agar, Yakup Bektas, Graeme Gooday and Ben Marsden)
