The Digital Preservation Coalition and the Wellcome Library have joined forces to present a one-day conference on 3D scanning and the preservation of 3D data, taking place at the Wellcome Collection in London on Friday 9th December 2016.

Registration is free for DPC members who have priority access and is open now: https://wellcomecollection.org/3d4ever

With origins in the 1960s, 3D scanning and printing is an established technology and has enjoyed a prominent place in the imagination but has remained been a rather niche concern in practice. But as scanning equipment become cheaper and more user-friendly, and as ubiquitous processing power improves, so the barriers to creating, sharing and accessing highly detailed 3d models are eroding. Digitisation, however, creates a digital preservation challenge.

This workshop will encourage cultural heritage professionals to understand and undertake 3d scanning, with a clear understanding of long term use case that cultural heritage implies, and the challenges this creates for a fast-moving technology. Laser scanning specialists will be invited to demonstrate the resilience of their outputs. Opportunities for creation, use, and re-use of 3d scanning data will be explored and case studies of good practice presented. The day will end by reviewing an action plan for long term access to laser scanning data, identifying key skills and requirements and the resources needed to develop them. As such the workshop will work to make 3d scanning a credible and attainable option for cultural heritage institutions.

Participants at the workshop will:

* Better understand emerging trends in 3d scanning and data management

* Better understand the standards associated with 3d scanning and their relation to core standards in digital preservation

* Examine case studies and good practice in data sharing and re-use

* Test and reflect on claims of sustainability of 3d data products made by vendors

* Make and gather recommendations on behalf of the DPC and Wellcome on quality improvement and digital preservation needs for 3d data workflows

* Be invited to evaluate the extent to which 3d scanning can be used to support heritage management
Who should come?
