Members of another list have suggested that the following offer might be worth making on this list also. (My apologies if you’ve already heard elsewhere.)

This is to announce the return of:
LEARN HOW TO STUDY — Developing the study skills and approaches to learning that will help you succeed in university

Dear colleagues:

I am writing to you because we share a concern with helping students improve their approaches to learning. Back in 1970 my book (Learn How to Study) was one of the first to pursue this aim and proved sufficiently popular to go through several editions until the pressures of work at the Open University meant I had to let it go out of print (and date) for some years.

Now I am retired, however, I have been able to bring it up to date and have recently published the 5th edition as a Kindle book only (in order to get the benefit of digital portability and lower cost). It is available both as a single volume and (for students who need only some of its content) with its content divided over five smaller Kindles.

The new edition enters a world in which there is vastly more advice on studying available than when the work first appeared and most universities have developed materials and other support specific to their local needs. Nevertheless, colleagues may feel that an outside perspective (such as my book offers) can sometimes provide helpful reinforcement. So I hope you will feel able to add it to the arsenal of resources you already recommend to students.

The book normally costs £6.47 (including the free Kindle app that some downloaders may need in order to read it on their computer, tablet or smart phone). But, until the end of FRIDAY this week (18 Nov), the book (and app) will be FREE to anyone who cares to download a copy from Amazon (at: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00UUD3JGY). Downloaders will be under no obligation and I will get no information about who they are. I would be grateful if you would forward this message to any students (or colleagues) who might be interested.

In case you do not see this message in time, please email me and I will send you a review copy of the book in PDF form. If you have any comments or suggestions I would be very pleased to receive them. (I wonder, for instance, whether you would recommend bringing out a paper version as well as the Kindle?)

Best wishes,
Dr Derek Rowntree
Professor of Educational Development at the Open University (retired)
