ABOUT CPRD

Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), jointly funded by the agency and the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), is the UK’s preeminent research service providing access to anonymised NHS data for research. CPRD services are designed to maximise the way anonymised NHS clinical data can be used to improve and safeguard public health. For more than 20 years data provided by CPRD have been used in a range of drug safety and epidemiological studies that have impacted on health care and resulted in over 1500 peer-reviewed publications. The UK is in a unique global position to use clinical records in novel ways for patient recruitment, clinical trials management and follow up. In addition to supporting high quality observational research, CPRD is developing world leading services based on using real world data to support clinical trials and intervention studies. 

 

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

CPRD is in period of significant expansion, offering increasing volumes of anonymised healthcare data for research and innovative services and products to support observational and interventional studies. The Researcher will provide and support a range of research activities in the CPRD Observational Research team. The post holder will use epidemiology and data management expertise to provide scientific input to the review of client applications submitted to the MHRA Independent Scientific Advisory Committee (ISAC); undertake collaborative and commissioned research services; create and deliver study specific datasets for external clients; and input into the development and application of best practice to maintain CPRD’s reputation as a centre of excellence for observational data and research services. The post is based within the Observational Research team and is line managed by a Senior Researcher in the team. The post holder will work closely with members of the Observational Research team and with colleagues in the CPRD Information Governance and Assurance team. The role will also liaise with personnel in other Divisions of the MHRA and will engage with a diverse range of CPRD customers and stakeholders. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS
A degree in Epidemiology, Medical Statistics, Public Health or equivalent related qualification is required.

 

COMPETENCIES

You will be asked to supply evidence of meeting these competencies when you apply:

·         In depth understanding of epidemiology and statistical concepts and experience of applying this in practice. Refined analytical thinking, high degree of attention to detail and proven ability to critically appraise scientific information. Familiarity with the challenges of using primary care and other health related data sources for research.

·         Proven ability in conducting epidemiological research using large complex longitudinal datasets. Experience in the use of different methods and approaches for manipulating, processing and extracting data. Competence in STATA and/or SAS.

·         Good knowledge of research governance for the use of and sharing of anonymised patient data. Working knowledge and understanding of quality assurance in research as demonstrated by the ability to identify and report on pertinent issues and suggest practical solutions.

·         Excellent organisational skills with a proven ability to undertake and deliver multiple projects on time. Able to work under pressure and to manage competing deadlines. Able to work with a high degree of autonomy.

·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate in a clear, succinct and engaging manner. Able to independently produce well-focused scientific reviews and to communicate complex information to a range of audiences.

·         Good team player, working closely with colleagues to deliver organisational objectives. Self-motivated, with a strong sense of personal accountability, ensuring tasks, projects and issues are appropriately dealt with to their successful delivery or conclusion.
