Half of these are QC tests. I was surprised by the low numbers, but as part of the training we emphasise the cost of the strips and this seems to make people averse to doing tests unnecessarily. We are currently rolling out the new DKA pathway, and trying to estimate the likely increase in the number of ketone tests that will be performed, particularly when the availability of ketone tests is expanded across the Acute Trust.
