Agreed Jonathan

The 1999 WHO definition is attached and I doubt many people follow it to the letter.

What fraction of oral glucose tolerance tests have ever been done in compliance with the procedure used in the definition?

Does that apply to the amount of beta carotene they use to colour it also?
Perhaps we should throw in LFT’s at the same time as the glucose measurements :P)

Having worked for GSK in a past life (on Lucozade), I can’t say that their batch-to-batch control would stand up to clinical standards anyway (unless colour, taste and specific gravity are validated ways of calculating glucose content).

A quick calculation suggests that it’s still 113 ml of Polycal to provide 75 g anhydrous glucose equivalent.

So, the sales of Lucozade should drop sharply.

Lucozade has never been appropriate for GTTs, as the volume required has always exceeded that given in the protocol. The reduction in content means it’s even worse, as John points out.

Try Polycal (I’m not sure if the composition is the same as when I did the original study in 1990 (!!!) but back then you needed 113 ml of Polycal solution).

We heard a rumour that Lucozade composition is changing, its still widely used for identifying gestational diabetes through OGTT
The message below suggests this is true, still plenty of time to think about it though.
For 75g I work that out to be 950mls!!

Dear John,

Thank you for your email regarding the sugar reduction in our drinks.

The new recipes will start appearing on shelf from July 2017 and will have a 50% sugar reduction.

All Lucozade Energy flavours will still contain at least 20g of glucose based carbohydrates per 250ml. In a 380ml bottle, there will be approximately 30g of glucose based carbohydrates.

We are proactively informing all relevant associations like the NHS and Diabetic groups across the UK.

I hope this answers your question, if you have any further questions please let us know.

Kind regards,

Jemini
