Teenage parents: Challenges and chances

Panel discussion and book launch, Thursday 3rd November, 5:15-7pm, Dovecot Studios, Infirmary Street, Edinburgh

Although rates have been falling in the UK for many years, teenage pregnancy is often seen as a problem to be solved, and reducing unintended pregnancies is a target for the Scottish government. Meanwhile, a growing body of research around the experiences of young parents suggests that becoming a parent as a teenager is not necessarily the disaster we are led to believe it will be. Indeed, for many young people, it is a positive experience and for some, can be a turning point in their lives.

The panel will discuss recent research by Dr Sally Brown about multi-generational experiences of teenage pregnancy and parenting. Panel members who work with young parents and who have been involved in developing local and national strategies in Scotland will discuss some of the challenges young parents face, and what can be done to support them and reduce social isolation and stigma.

Panel chair:
Professor Lynn Jamieson, Centre for Research on Families and Relationships, Edinburgh University

Panel members:
Thomas Lynch, Dads Rock, Wester Hailes

Anna Chrystal, Stepping Stones North Edinburgh

Lesley Walker, NHS Lothian

Sally Brown, Edinburgh Napier University

The discussion will be followed by a wine reception to celebrate the launch of Sally’s book, ‘Teenage pregnancy, parenting and intergenerational relations’ published by Palgrave Macmillan. Further details here:
