Cities as Community Spaces conference

Registration closing soon

The third in the Valletta 2018 Foundation's series of annual international conferences on cultural relations in Europe and the Mediterranean, this conference explores the interplay between physical/virtual space and its use by the different communities within a city.

This conference will bring together researchers, cultural practitioners and policy makers to share knowledge about the social dynamics through which space (public, private and virtual) serves as a site of discourse, contestation and critical reflection within and between communities. The conference will explore the following six main themes:

-          Driving Seats - Community Driven Spaces

-          Moving Walls - Community Contested Spaces

-          Creative Revivors - Developing Creative Spaces

-          City Starters - City Space as an Empowerment Tool

-          #Community - Online Community Spaces

-          Policity - Policy for Active Community Spaces

The conference will be addressed by leaders in the fields of urbanism, community activism, architecture and sociology. Keynote speakers include Shawn Micallef (co-founder of the Jane Jacobs prize-winning magazine Spacing, exploring Canadian urbanism), Dr Paolo Gerbaudo (author of Tweets and the Streets: Social Media and Contemporary Activism) and Jonas Būchel (co-founder of Urban Institute Riga), amongst others.

The conference will also include an audio-visual installation by Lebanese artist Tania El Khoury titled Stories of Refuge, which tells the story of three Syrian asylum seekers who fled Syria and sought refuge in Munich, and Quintessence, an immersive performance by Maltese composer Renzo Spiteri.

Registration for the conference closes on 31st October 2016. More information, including registration details are available on the conference website: http://conference.valletta2018.org.
