‘Operation Yewtree; Grip and Good Governance’ is an examination of how the police and NSPCC managed the UK’s highest profile investigation of this millennium. The impacts persist to this day with ONS recording an 87% increase in the reporting of rape since October 2012. Former Commander, Peter Spindler who led this complex and challenging operation, will take you behind the scenes to explain the governance structures, dilemmas, challenges and how the team managed to maintain an effective victim focus through engagement with a complex set of stakeholders. He will conclude with an analysis of the so called ‘Yewtree Effect’ and what it means for British society today .

Peter Spindler joined the Metropolitan Police in 1985, after graduating from the University of Warwick. In 1998, he was seconded to the Regional Crime Squad and was promoted to Detective Superintendent in 2000, whilst on the National Crime Squad, where he took on the national lead for combating child abuse on the Internet. In 2002, he returned to the MPS to lead on pro-activity and major investigations for the Child Protection Command. As Detective Chief Superintendent, he took the lead for all child abuse investigations in London in 2004. He has had three postings as Commander at New Scotland Yard; Covert Policing, Director of Professional Standards and head of Specialist Crime Investigations, where he took the national lead for Operation Yewtree.
