Dear all,

Further to yesterday’s email (below). Our first two courses on Setting have now been advertised:

Setting in Practice: Understanding how to evaluate the setting of heritage assets and the nature of impacts upon it

The setting of heritage assets has risen up planning agendas within recent years, emphasising the need for clear and guided approaches to its proportionate consideration in development management and strategic planning. This course introduces the key principles and practices behind successfully evaluating the setting of heritage assets. A series of workshops and presentations introduce the processes of defining the extents of setting and the contribution it makes to an asset’s historic significance. A range of development scenarios reveal how developments can enhance or bring harm to an asset’s value and significance, and potential methods for effective mitigation are introduced.

Subject: Historic England ESSENTIALS Training Programme

Hello all,

The Historic England ‘Essentials’ Programme is a new national training initiative aimed at local authority planning officers and early career heritage professionals. Over the next 2 years, five courses delivered at over 40 events across all regions of England will provide training on key principles and practices of planning effectively with the historic environment. Courses are free and include lunch, and all venues will be easily accessible by public transport.

An overview of the courses can be found here - https://historicengland.org.uk/services-skills/training-skills/essentials/. Please note, the full timetable of courses is being finalised, hence the currently limited list of events.

One of these courses is aimed at improving levels of awareness and  understanding of heritage information within the local authority planning community. The course has therefore been designed for local authority planning officers and postgraduate heritage professionals that are currently working in the sector. Skills developed are essential for those looking to establish a grounding in planning for the historic environment, and are tailored to the needs of development managers and strategic planners. Please note this course is not aimed at heritage professionals working within Historic Environment Records unless they are relatively new to the profession.

We would be grateful if you could offer the course to colleagues within your local planning authorities, so that they can take up the opportunity to attend.

For now, the events for the Yorkshire and East of England regions have been advertised:

I will provide the links to the HER Forum as and when these events (and others within the programme) are advertised.

Thanks, and best wishes

Jack
