Technical Associate II

The Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Rochester seeks a Laboratory Technician whose primary responsibility is to direct and maintain a suite of geochemistry laboratories.  These laboratories include an Agilent 7900 inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer with laser-ablation capability (Photon Machines G2 excimer 193 nm laser), class 100 clean rooms, heavy mineral separation facilities, a cathodoluminescence imaging system, and the experimental geochemistry laboratory (end-loaded piston cylinders, 1 atmosphere furnaces, and associated peripherals).  Duties include, but are not necessarily limited to, training of departmental and external users, engaging in collaborative scientific research with the University of Rochester faculty, post-docs, and students, trouble-shooting the instruments and software, preparation of samples and reagents, interfacing with technical support representatives, ordering supplies, maintaining records and files, and serving as the liaison to the campus safety office for these laboratories.

Qualifications include master's or doctoral degree in geoscience (or related natural science field) or equivalent experience and hands-on experience in the operation of LA-ICP-MS instruments or other mass spectrometers.  Previous experience with wet chemistry procedures, clean laboratory practices, electron beam technologies (e.g., SEM, EMPA), and experimental geochemistry techniques is also highly desirable.  Also important are the interpersonal skills needed to provide effective supervision and oversight for experienced individuals and novices.

Inquiries about this positon should be directed to Dustin Trail ([log in to unmask]) or Mauricio Ibanez-Mejia ([log in to unmask]).

Interested candidates should apply online at:  https://www.rochester.edu/working/hr/jobs/  ; search for job code 197834.  The position will remain open until it is filled with a preferred start date on or around January 1st 2017, but is flexible.
