Qualitative Research Methods for HTA

A new online CPD course is being offered by HEHTA from October 2016. ‘Qualitative research methods for HTA’ is currently run as a course on our MSc in HTA programme, and from 31st
October to 2nd December 2016 it will also be run as a non-accredited CPD course.
This course aims to expose students to the application of qualitative methods in conceptual modelling, informing trial design, contexts and measures, and how it can
be used to maximise the impact. The course will provide students with an opportunity to collect and analyse some qualitative data
The course is structured as follows:
Week 1 Introducing qualitative research, including research philosophy, the use of theory in constructing research questions, using literature critically, and the
ethics of qualitative research.
Week 2 Qualitative evidence synthesis in HTA, including comparisons with quantitative forms of review and synthesis. Students will be asked to critically review
HTA reports that have employed qualitative literature synthesis.
Week 3 Methodologies, study design, and data type including the following: Action Research and Case Studies, ethnography and observing conduct. It also introduces
a range of data collection methods including interviews and focus groups. Students will have an opportunity to select a data collection method and conduct small scale data collection during this week.
Week 4 Analysis and interpretation of qualitative evidence. It will summarise different approaches to analysis and how theory is used to interpret evidence. Students
will be given an opportunity to analyse the data they collect from the previous activity.
Week 5 “Telling it” - Presenting and writing and constructing arguments. Students will be invited to create short videos or live presentations about their data,
for feedback from the tutor.
All materials (examples, case studies, reading) have been selected for their relevance to typical HTA subject areas.

All you need to participate in our online programmes is a computer and internet access.
