About the Department:

The Department of City Planning & Real Estate Development (CPRED) – formerly known as the Department

of Planning, Development and Preservation (http://www.clemson.edu/caah/departments/pdp/) - is a dynamic

interdisciplinary Department offering a PAB-accredited Master of City and Regional Planning (MCRP) on the

main campus, and a Master of Real Estate Development (MRED) in Downtown Greenville, SC.

The MCRP program was established in 1968, enrolls approximately 40 students, has strong links to the South

Carolina chapter of the American Planning Association and practitioners in the state and region. Our MCRP degree

is one of the top 12 small programs in the United States according to Planetizen, and has grown substantially in

profile and stature over the past several years. With about 600 alumni, Clemson’s MCRP program is the sole

accredited program in the state of South Carolina, and therefore has a special opportunity and responsibility

towards contributing to planning in a state that is home to Charleston, one of the most historic cities in the

the nation, one of the most significant national historic landmark districts focused on the African American

experience (www.penncenter.com), and Greenville, one of the nation’s most innovative cities

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZqj5FrbyJY). Our long-standing Public Service Assistantship Program

(PSA) partners with local governments to support students to achieve these goals, and our growing international

partnerships have developed relationships in Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe. The program has deep links to the

national land local leadership of APA and others professional associations.

Founded in 2004, MRED is an applied, full-time, 56-credit program that can be completed in either 18-months

for Entry Level Early Career Students, or 12-months for experienced development professionals. The program

has matriculated 210 students, who graduated from 90 undergraduate collegiate institutions from 30 states, Asia

and the Middle East as well as other countries. Students come from the design/construction, business/finance,

and social science/humanities backgrounds. Our 175 alumni are employed with premier real estate firms,

agencies, and non-profits in 44 metro areas in 25 states and Asia. See program description at:

CPRED is overseen by a Department Chair that also takes responsibility for the MCRP program, supported by

an MRED Program Director who manages the academic and professional aspects of that program. CPRED

includes a departmental faculty of 11 full-time faculty members. Each program typically admits 15-20 students

annually. CPRED is also a host of the multidisciplinary Ph.D. in Planning, Design & the Built Environment

(PDBE).

With a new College and University Strategic Plan in place (https://www.clemson.edu/forward/), this is an

exciting time for the faculty and leadership of the department, and all three positions are seen as key

contributors to this plan. It is anticipated that all three positions will begin in August, 2017.

1. Department Chair

City Planning & Real Estate Development (CPRED)

Candidates should be senior scholars with a doctorate, as well as a record of distinguished teaching,

research/practice, and/or public service. The successful candidate should have excellent interpersonal skills and

experience - or show promise - in a number of the following areas: academic strategic planning; fiscal and

personnel management; consensus building; external funding and sponsored projects; communication with

leaders in the private, public, and non-profit sectors; capital and departmental fundraising; and alumni relations.

The Chair of CPRED directly oversees the MCRP program, supervises the MRED Program Director, and works

closely with the interdisciplinary PhD program in Planning, Design and the Built Environment. The MRED

program is self-financed through a differential tuition, while the MCRP program is a standard academic unit

with campus-related tuition and assistantships.

The Chair position at Clemson is a non-rotating, permanent university appointment with significant autonomy,

and takes responsibility for all academic and financial management of the department. Chairs are expected to

continue teaching, research, and public service as appropriate.

2. Program Director/Professor

Real Estate Development (MRED)

The successful candidate will have a record of strong professional achievements in the field of real estate

commensurate with the appointment. This individual will also have the exceptional research or practice

credentials needed to lead a nationally-known interdisciplinary graduate program that combines aspects of

finance, architecture, construction, law and planning. The successful candidate will have either a successful

traditional tenured academic profile, or a successful practioner profile. In the former case, (s)he would have

strong relationships with developers and industry; in the latter case (s)he would have a deep understanding of

the value of research and scholarship. The opening is for the rank of Professor, Associate Professor, or

Professor of Practice.

The Department is seeking individuals who are able to work with diverse students and colleagues, and who can

work in collaboration with disciplines from both within and outside of the MRED Program. We anticipate that

the successful candidate will continue Clemson’s innovative and forward-thinking program by leading not just

the program at Clemson, but play a role nationally and internationally in the rapidly growing academic field of

Real Estate Development education and training.

City & Regional Planning (MCRP)

We are seeking candidates who can play a central role in the growth of the department. While we are open to all

specialties, particular attention will be paid to applicants in those areas able to connect the Planning and Real

Estate fields, such as housing and community development, spatial analysis/GIS, or land use and development.

A Ph.D. in planning is preferred (ABD expected by starting date is acceptable), although a PhD in a related field

with a prior degree in Planning, combined with related experience or publications will be considered. Candidates

should demonstrate a potential to contribute to and advance the profession through peer-reviewed research, as

well as an interest in contributing to the interdisciplinary PDBE PhD program.

Successful candidates will offer a strong research agenda; have a demonstrated or potential capacity for

civic/professional engagement and for generating external funding; and a record of, or promise of excellence in

teaching and mentoring students. In addition to specialized courses in her/his subfield, preferred candidates

will be able to teach in at least one core area of the MCRP program. The department also values an interest in

collaborating with the department's other graduate program in Real Estate Development. Teaching

responsibilities are consistent with a Research I university that prioritizes scholarship and research.
