Dimensions of Political Ecology Conference (DOPE 2017)

Registration for DOPE 2017 is now open!  

The registration fee is $45 for graduate students and $90 for faculty and non-academics/practitioners; there is no fee for undergraduate participants. All University of Kentucky students register for free. Registration will end December 1, 2016. There will be no extensions.


Dynamic participant-organized sessions are key to the success of the conference, reflecting the wide range of innovative research currently taking place in political ecology. To this end, we encourage you to organize a session for DOPE 2017.  The conference is open to any topical, theoretical, or methodological frameworks that address the ecological dimensions of political, social, and economic research, as well as the social aspects of natural sciences. For further information about organizing your own session, please refer to our Call for Sessions/Papers.


DOPE 2017 Speakers:

The DOPE organizing collective is pleased to announce the featured speakers for the 2017 conference!

Keynote SpeakerSandra Harding, PhD Dr. Harding is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Education and Gender Studies in the UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, a Distinguished Affiliate Professor of Philosophy at Michigan State University, and the former director of the Center for the Study of Women at UCLA.

Welcome AddressPaul Robbins, PhD - Dr. Robbins is the director of the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the former director of the School of Geography and Development at the University of Arizona.

Plenary Panel:

J. Peter Brosius, PhD - Dr. Brosius is a Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of Georgia and the founder of UGA’s Center for Integrative Conservation Research.

Nancy Lee Peluso, PhD - Dr. Peluso is a 2006 John Simon Guggenheim Fellow and the Henry J. Vaux Distinguished Professor of Forest Policy in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at the University of California, Berkeley.

Juanita Sundberg, PhD - Dr. Sundberg is an associate professor in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia and the 2014 recipient of the AAG Glenda Laws Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to geographic research on social issues.

Betsy Beymer-Farris, PhD. (Moderator) - Dr. Beymer-Farris is an Assistant Professor of Geography at the University of Kentucky and a Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of International Environment and Development Studies at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences.

2017 Paper Competitions:

The Political Ecology Working Group is pleased to sponsor two awards recognizing distinguished graduate and undergraduate student research that contributes to the field of political ecology. Undergraduate papers will be presented at a special Undergraduate Symposium during the conference, and cash prizes will be awarded to the winners of both the Undergraduate and Graduate level competitions.

Submissions are due January 15, 2017.

Field Trips:

We are excited to announce the addition of two new field trips this year the UK Compost Tour and the Horse Country Tour (a description of each can be found on our website). When booking travel for the 2017 DOPE Conference, please remember that all field trips occur THURSDAY, February 23rd, with the exception of the Mammoth Cave Tour, which takes place on SUNDAY, February 26th.
