Just to add to this, there are several independent sets of backups possible.
One set is created automatically when you save (in case the save fails). (There is supposed to be a warning if the save does fail but I think this often gets missed.) Unfortunately the same files that were empty in Elena’s project were also
empty in the corresponding backup.
The second set of backups is created at specified time intervals via the Project —> Backup dialog. It’s always worth setting this to be on.
And a third set of backups can be created manually via the Project —> Archive dialog. Or the user can do the same via ordinary operating system tools like tar or cp or scp.
Fortunately Elena had some backups which were three days old. I have seen other situations where people have never used the second or third mechanism above, but have been saved by the first one. Elena’s case was unusual in that the first one
completely failed.
Needless to say, it is also worth saving backups to other disks. Dropbox, or similar, is good for this, if you have the space, since the backup is on some computer somewhere else in the world, and you can easily get at it from other computers.
(I wouldn’t say these are particularly secure so if you have very sensitive data then this is likely not a good idea.) And if you’re on a Mac, then just having a disk set up with Time Machine plugged into one of your USB ports can be a life saver. (I’ve
only had to recover three or four files that way over N years but that definitely saved me some grief those three or four times.) Obviously if you are using a portable this is a bit more of a pain to manage.

But unfortunately more than one (actually several important files are emptied). I have no clue who that could happen as I never open these files. I finished working, saved project and left ccpn. Very
weird story. As several files are empty not it will be easier to use last backup.

Hi Elena,
I don’t remember if it was the same error message or not, but two of my students had trouble opening projects because they had accidentally saved other files on top of CCPN xml files. We were able to identify from the error message combined with navigating
down all the folders which file had been overwritten, and restore it from the backup copy.
I don’t know if this is the same problem as you have, but it may be worth investigating.
