The Institute of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany, currently offers a position for a postdoctoral scientists (E13 TV-G-U) in the research group of Prof Knapp (http://www.uni-frankfurt.de/53483664/Knapp). The position is available IMMEDIATELY and the appointment is funded for 2 years with an option of extension. Female candidates are especially encouraged to apply. Precedence will be given to handicapped candidates at equal qualification.

The project is funded by the Michael J Fox Foundation (MJFF) and comprises an interdisciplinary work on the elucidation of the function and structure of the protein kinase Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2). LRRK2 is a key signalling molecule in neurons and dysregulation of LRRK2 is tightly associated with the development of Parkinson's disease (PD), a common degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that affects more than 5 million people globally. This kinase represents a challenging target for structural biology as it is a large multi-domain protein containing diverse scaffolding domains (ARM, ANK, LRR, WD40) as well as two domains with presumed catalytic activity: a kinase domain (Kin) and a GTPase domain (ROC/COR).

Requirements:

The ideal candidate will have a Master degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Biophysics and a PhD in protein biochemistry and/or crystallography. Considerable experience in protein expression in insect cells (a must), protein biochemistry and structure determination using X-ray crystallography is required. The candidate should have a proven track record in the technologies listed above and excellent communication skills in English.

The planned research will be carried out in a highly stimulating and international research environment, integrated in the life science campus Riedberg in close collaboration with an international network of scientists working on a better understanding of PD and on new opportunities for a cure.  Interested candidates are encourage to submit their CVs to the following e-mail address:
