Alan,

Last time I taught the history of political economy (2003-4 - a course for politics students) I used:

W K Tabb, Reconstructing Political Economy, Routledge 1999

However, it's quite a demanding read: more basic texts were:

R L Heilbroner, The Worldly Philosophers, 7th ed. Penguin 2000

D Dowd, Capitalism and its Economics: a Critical History, Pluto 2000.

Greetings!

One of these texts could be useful:

1) Schools and Streams of Economic Thought, by Edmund Whittaker, or

2) Property and Prophets: The Evolution fo Economic Institutions and Ideologies, by E. K. Hunt.

As always,

Hi folks

I have a request from a friend who has been asked to locate a standard history of economics text suitable for use on undergraduate and postgraduate courses, which includes Marxism (and deals with the latter in a scholarly manner, not dismissively or Whiggishly). The idea is to translate this book so it’s a serious project. I recommended Roll’s history, but one problem is (in my opinion) that the later editions don’t cover Marx as well as the earlier ones.

Any suggestions?

Regards
Alan
