Archivist - Two Year Contract (full-time position, competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience)

 

The Birmingham Oratory, in association with the National Institute for Newman Studies (NINS) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, seeks an archivist for a two year contract position, who has the following qualifications:

 

·      Master’s Degree in Archival Science or Library Science

·      Experience and/or familiarity with archival processes, including archival description (ISAD(G), EAD, etc.)

·      Cataloguing experience, preferably in manuscripts, rare books, and special collections

·      Experience with digitization and metadata creation

·       Familiarity with Catholic collections not essential but a plus

 

The duties focus on organizing and cataloguing the archival collection of John Henry Newman, and include:

 

·      Organizing the physical collection and correlate physical items with their digitized images

·      Describing physical and digital objects according to a Dublin Core-based schema

·      Reorganizing the physical collection into a local cataloguing system (Bellasis/Culler), and recording classification information in the archival database according to a Dublin Core-based schema.

·      Expanding the local cataloguing system (Bellasis/Culler) to include all un-catalogued material

·      Working under the supervision of the current archivist of the Birmingham Oratory Archives

·       Carrying out other work related to the organization and preservation of the material at the Birmingham Oratory

 

The archive is located within the living quarters of the Birmingham Oratory.  The successful candidate will need to be respectful of the fact that their place of work is also a place of residence for the religious community at the Birmingham Oratory.
