Peter Hall on Mapping and Security

Underlying the rhetoric of security, in both territories and networks, is a statistical and probabilistic approach that perpetuates a particular way of seeing the problems. Drawing from the lessons of critical cartography, Peter will argue that our mapping and visualisation tools are wedded to rationalistic and military-industrial systems which are less suited to complex challenges of the 21st Century. The computing clouds, socio-technical networks and 'wicked problems' of today cannot, technically, be contained, so do we need less synoptic and more emergent methods and tools to visualise and re-imagine the idea of security?
Peter Hall is Senior Lecturer in Graphic Communication Design at Central Saint Martins University of the Arts London. His work focuses on data visualisation and mapping as a design process. He has edited several anthologies including Else/Where: Mapping - New Cartographies of Networks and Territories (edited with Janet Abrams, 2006) and Design in the Borderlands (2014).
