Hello everyone.

I’m trying to help a colleague find out the cost (very roughly) to the healthcare system of missing B12 deficiency. If anyone could point me in a direction where I might be able to find some info out it would be very much appreciated.

The Pernicious Anemia Society state that it typically takes 2 years for this patient group to get a diagnosis. During this time there are multiple visits to the GP, phlebotomy, pathology costs etc. In addition there’s the cost of treating patients who develop anaemia, potentially irreversible neuropathy and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Obviously costing this out in a credible way would be a very big project. For starters though does anyone know roughly how much it costs for a visit to phlebotomy, or the cost of a typical GP consultation?

Thanking you in anticipation.

Katharine
