Courses from the EPPI-Centre will provide you with highly sought-after skills and knowledge, supporting career development in those academic, policy or practice settings where policy is developed and evaluated and systematic reviews are used and produced. Our online courses allow you to choose where and when you study, whilst still receiving tuition from experienced researchers at the EPPI-Centre in London.

1. Systematic reviews: diversity, design and debate (online)*

Runs 26 September to 18 December 2016 (includes one week of induction).

This course will enable you to plan and appraise systematic reviews. On successful completion you will be familiar with the purposes, designs, and strengths and weaknesses of different systematic review approaches and have a critical appreciation of evidence-informed policy and practice.

2. Research engagement, participation and impact (online)

Runs 26 September to 18 December 2016 (includes one week of induction).

This course provides participants with knowledge and skills to help ensure research and policy address issues of concern to the public, practitioners and policymakers. Students develop understanding about research impact, and of approaches that enable stakeholders to play an active role, both in research projects, and in policy decision-making that uses research.

3. MSc Systematic reviews for public policy and practice - Reviewing and using research*

This MSc will equip you with conceptual and practical skills for conducting and appraising systematic reviews and evaluating the potential for and implementation of evidence-informed policy. Students can learn at a distance using a combination of online group and individual activities. You will receive support from experienced course tutors at mutually arranged times and written feedback on draft work. Students work as a small cohort and carry out activities at their own pace and at times of their own choosing, but are asked to complete specified tasks to set deadlines. For their dissertation, students are supported to conduct a carefully tailored systematic review or a study of evidence-informed policy. Individual modules (eg. 1 and 2 above) can be taken for credit and imported into MSc study at a later date.

What different ways of studying are open to me?

Courses 1 and 2 above can be taken as stand-alone courses with or without credit. Both are quality assured at Masters level by the UCL Institute of Education. The MSc SRPPP can be taken entirely at a distance, but offers modules that are taught using face-to-face sessions for students who prefer this style of learning.

Who takes our courses?

Our recent short course and MSc students have come from a wide range of policy sectors, including health, but also social work, education and International Development. To register for the MSc you will usually need an upper second-class degree in health, education or another area of social science or policy, or have another professional qualification e.g. for teaching, police force, health care, social work. If you have other kinds of qualifications we may ask you to take a qualifying test. You will need to be able to communicate in English, have online access, and be ready for a style of learning that mixes self-directed reading with written discussion and short pieces of individual or collaborative writing with other students, in response to set tasks (see webpages below for full detail).
