Hi all,

Following the interesting conversations we had at the Research Data Network (thanks Rosie and Marta), there seem to be a few people who’d like to discuss the RDM Champions idea further, exchange ideas & documents and compare progress. Also, Jisc showed an interest (and there might be ways Jisc can support some of our efforts).

For now, it seems sensible to take the discussion off the Research-Dataman list, and then summarise and report back at a later stage. If you are interested contributing to the discussion, can you please show your interest by emailing me ([log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>). We can then think about how we can take this forward.

Thanks
Hardy

Hi Kathryn,

Of course – I have just uploaded them here: http://dx.doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.61514
Let me know if you have any questions – happy to explain.
If you have any ANDS resources that you could share with the list, that would be wonderful to see what you are doing in Australia.

Best,

Marta

Hi Marta,
At ANDS we also have a keen interest in the cultivation of data management champions. Researcher engagement with data management continues to be a challenge for Australian research institutions too.

I was wondering if you would be willing to share your slides from your talk at the RDN meeting.

warmest regards
Kathryn

Hi All,

Also to let you know that my talk at RDN meeting on Tuesday (McCrum Lecture Theatre, 12:15) will be explicitly about engaging researchers & what worked and what didn’t in Cambridge.

Best and see you soon,

Marta

Hi Rosie and Hardy

I hope that the discussion on engaging researchers also touches on this on Monday ( just the engaged Jisc Rd shared service pilot HEI S will be there of course).

So it won't cover everything everything but will to some extent.

See you next week
Rachel

Hi Hardy,

That’s great, if anyone else is interested in discussing RDM Champions idea I suggest we meet up over lunch on Tuesday.

Hi Everyone,

We are about to embark on a similar programme at Cambridge. We are hoping to send out our call for Champions within the next week and aim to have an initial meeting with them in October/November. We will be sending out a form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1f_9YJbHKB1FM8dvAJLiXl_aM3bqb_VZtBO2CNhGaLiA/edit?usp=sharing) and putting up a webpage outlining the details of the scheme (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1R5zHqpkJBgliM5iiwy1681G8cYfozeMSdkxjcL2hDog/edit?usp=sharing). It would be great to have any comments on these documents.

In answer to your questions Hardy:

  * Researchers will be asked to deliver a workshop to their local community, advocate for RDM within their department/institution, provide advice to researchers where appropriate and ask them to feedback their expertise to the wider community at Cambridge
  * We will accept researchers at any stage of their careers, as well as data managers and the support staff who are interested
  * The incentives we’ve identified are networking, training in delivering workshops, visibility within the university/community. I think this may be the hardest bit to get right as the different groups we are trying to target will be incentivised by different things.

It would be great to organise a phone call about this with others who are interested, or maybe we could meet at the Research Data Network meeting next week?

Best wishes,

Rosie

Hi Everyone,

At Lancaster we are currently investigating the possibility of initiating a “Research Data Champions” community. These Data Champions are supposed to help us with advocacy and (if required) with subject expertise. Incentives to become a Champion are yet to be defined.

We wonder if anyone has experience with establishing a similar community or helpful thoughts regarding the following questions:
• What are the roles and responsibilities of a Research Data Champion?
• Who are the Research Data Champions (ECRs or more senior)?
• What are possible incentives for Research Data Champions?

I have had an interesting email conversation with Andrew Burnham from the University of Leicester regarding their Data Champions<https://www2.le.ac.uk/services/research-data/rdm/rdmguidance-leicester/research-data-champions> approach but maybe other universities tried something similar and can share their thoughts?
