I think a very interesting project was also the "Global water experiment
with hydrogels" organised by the RSC in 2015. It involved schools from all
over the world. You can find a brief intro in this video:

Hi Shruti,

I agree this sounds great. To add a few other examples that are local and
have a different focus to the environment projects already suggested (to
give you some variety), I'd throw in:

The Great Brain Experiment <http://www.thegreatbrainexperiment.com/>, a
series of games to get people involved in science about the 'mind and the
brain'.

Lab_13 <http://www.ignitefutures.org.uk/lab-13>, an in-school space
dedicated entirely to scientific investigation, innovation and creativity,
managed and led by young people.

Sea Hero Quest
<http://www.alzheimersresearchuk.org/our-research/what-we-do/sea-hero-quest/?gclid=CPzImqbAk88CFXQo0wodjg4BTQ>,
a smartphone game to help researchers understand how our brains navigate
space.

And if it's not too cheeky to add a plug, Dementia Citizens
<http://dementiacitizens.org/>, a platform that connects people with
dementia and carers with the dementia research community. It's currently in
closed beta testing with two pilot research projects, Playlist for Life and
Book of You. As part of the team who built those two apps I'd be very happy
to chat about them further or answer any questions you might have.

Thanks,

Emilie

Subject: My new book

Hi everyone
Some of you on this list were among the 300+ people who bought advance copies of my book through the crowdfunding publisher Unbound. Many thanks for your support.

The book came out last week, and is now available from Waterstones, Unbound and Amazon, etc. Unfortunately, Unbound has only a part-time publicist, hence this shameless plug... I would be grateful if any list-members could spread the word to anyone who might be interested.
Ladders to Heaven is about how fig trees have shaped our world, influenced diverse cultures and can help us restore life to degraded rainforests — all thanks to their curious biology.

Here’s an early review from ‘Godfather of Biodiversity’ Professor Thomas Lovejoy:  "The complex web of ecological connections between fig trees, tropical forest animals and plants, as well as people and human culture is nothing short of a marvel. [Ladders to Heaven] is a page-turner and a revelation: You will never again think of a fig as just something to eat. There is no a better way to introduce the complexity and wonder of nature – and our intricate relationship with it. A must read."

I’ve pasted a summary below.
Best wishes
Mike

Ladders To Heaven: How fig trees shaped our history, fed our imaginations and can enrich our future

They are trees of life and trees of knowledge. They are wish-fulfillers … rainforest royalty … more precious than gold. They are the fig trees, and they have affected humanity in profound but little-known ways. Ladders to Heaven tells their amazing story.

Fig trees fed our pre-human ancestors, influenced diverse cultures and played key roles in the dawn of civilization. They feature in every major religion, starring alongside Adam and Eve, Krishna and Buddha, Jesus and Muhammad. This is no coincidence – fig trees are special. They evolved when giant dinosaurs still roamed and have been shaping our world ever since.

These trees intrigued Aristotle and amazed Alexander the Great. They were instrumental in Kenya’s struggle for independence and helped restore life after Krakatoa’s catastrophic eruption. Egypt’s Pharaohs hoped to meet fig trees in the afterlife and Queen Elizabeth II was asleep in one when she ascended the throne.

And all because 80 million years ago these trees cut a curious deal with some tiny wasps. Thanks to this deal, figs sustain more species of birds and mammals than any other trees, making them vital to rainforests. In a time of falling trees and rising temperatures, their story offers hope.

Ultimately, it’s a story about humanity’s relationship with nature. The story of the fig trees stretches back tens of millions of years, but it is as relevant to our future as it is to our past.

Hi PSCI-COM List Members

I am one of the co-organisers of Ireland’s largest science communication conference SCI:COMie @scicomie <https://twitter.com/scicomie>. The theme for the 2016 conference is ‘Let’s not go there…..difficult conversations in Science Communication’. Our 2016 website will be up shortly (2015 site - http://scicom2015.com/speakers/ <http://scicom2015.com/speakers/>).

We are looking for a speaker who has publicly questioned the value of science communication. Someone who is vocal about investing time in public engagement while workloads in research and teaching are increasing AND / OR who questions value and impact of science communication.

There is no point in scientists trying to talk to the public--it does more harm than good - belief of Wilhelm Röntgen, discoverer of x-rays. Was he right?

Maybe the hive-mind could suggest a few names?

Great to join PSCI-COM conversation.

Dear all

This event could well be of interest to people involved in citizen science projects -

Challenges and opportunities of analysing ecological citizen science data
Joint meeting of the British Ecological Society (QE and Citizen Science SIGS), Environmental Statistics Section of the Royal Statistical Society and the British and Irish Region of the International Biometric Society.
Mon 10 October 2016, 10:00 – 18:30
Cambridge, UK. £27.14 – £37.76.

As for a citizen science project, one I'm aware of (via one of our Fellows who is involved in the project and through a friend who is using the app):
Cloudy with a chance of pain
https://www.cloudywithachanceofpain.com/
looking at potential links between weather and chronic pain and arthritis. Helps individuals to keep a pain diary through an app, collects data on their pain experiences and weather information as it goes.

With best wishes

Subject: Masterclass in essential communications and research engagement

Dear all,

This year the Association of Medical Research Charities (AMRC) will be holding our annual masterclass for science and communications professionals on 4 October. We'll hear from speakers about how they've helped their charities in three key areas:

 *   Making an impact with social media and campaigns about research
 *   Internal communications and raising the brand of science in their organisation
 *   Engaging with researchers in science communications and mobilising them to engage with their audiences.

The event will cover developing integrated campaigns through to managing internal communications and public engagement projects. We have put together a programme of successful case studies and projects which we hope will inspire your communications work. While this event is aimed at science and communication professionals in charities it is also open to those working in academic institutions or anybody looking to get a flavour of the sector.

This one-day masterclass features a great line-up of speakers, including:

 *   Peter Blair, Breast Cancer Now
 *   David Salmon, Parkinson's UK
 *   Emma Johns, Motor Neurone Disease Association
 *   Ben Kolb, British Heart Foundation
 *   Vicki Smith, Sarcoma UK
 *   Lisa Whittaker, Tenovus Cancer Care
 *   Holly Rogers, Academy of Medical Sciences
 *   Robin Banerji, West London Mental Health NHS Trust

In addition there will be plenty of opportunity for Q&A, discussion and networking with colleagues.

For more information and to book<https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/amrc-masterclass-essential-communications-and-research-engagement-tickets-26799389696>: Non-member price £318.75, AMRC member price £127.50, AMRC member: second delegate price £87.50.
