Contemporary Crafts and Textiles Research: A Research Networking Event
Wednesday 9 November 2016, 10.00 – 16.00.
University of Leicester
This one day interdisciplinary symposium hosted by the CAMEo Institute at the University of Leicester brings together researchers interested in aspects of crafts and textiles in the contemporary context. The day offers an informal opportunity to share your research and make connections with others with similar interests. Details below – please feel free to forward to others you think may be interested.
Please submit expressions of interest (of no more than 250 words) by Monday 10 October to
Jessica Bain ([log in to unmask]).
Expressions of interest should summarize your research interests. Research exploring aspects of amateur sewing/dressmaking/knitting/crocheting in particular are welcomed, as are those exploring media representations of such activities. Other topics might
include (but are not limited to) craftivism, (micro) craft enterprises, craft groups and communities in a digital context.
Proposed Programme:
10.00: welcome and coffee
10.30: short presentations (5-10 minutes each) on individual research interests
12.30: lunch
14.00: roundtable discussion of shared interests, emergent themes and possible future collaborations/outputs
15.30: next steps and close
There will be no cost to attend this event as the registration and catering will be covered by the British Academy funded Digital Dressmaking Project coordinated by Dr Jessica Bain. Participants will need to cover the costs of travel.
This 'Contemporary Crafts and Textiles Research Networking' is part of a week of CAMEo events on the theme of 'Craft Cultures,' taking place 8-11 November. Join us later on Wednesday 9 November from 5-7pm for our keynote event featuring Kate Fletcher (author of Craft of Use: Post-Growth Fashion) and Susan Luckman (author of Craft and the Creative Economy) with Nicola Thomas as discussant. Details of this and other public talks, workshops and events will be available shortly on the CAMEo website (http://www2.le.ac.uk/research/institutes/cameo).
