Subject: Re: Where to publish Quality Improvement work

My thoughts on this topic:

I think that, traditionally, people have published their Quality Improvement project results in a discipline-specific journal.

Really, the authors need to think of the audience. If the audience is other orthopaedic surgeons, then they might be better publishing in a journal read by orthopaedic surgeons rather than a journal that specialises in Quality Improvement. However, if the Quality Improvement is translatable to other fields/situations, then a more general journal will be appropriate. A couple of journals that may be applicable are Journal for Healthcare Quality, International Journal for Quality in Healthcare and Journal of Delivery Science and Innovation. There may be something on the list on this page https://chsr.med.uky.edu/quality-improvement-qi-journals (from University of Kentucky).

They might also consider sending this to NHSIQ (now NHSE's Sustainable Improvement Team) for them to post on their website as a Case Study http://www.nhsiq.nhs.uk/case-studies.aspx .

Subject: Where to publish Quality Improvement work

Dear All,

We have had a query from our Trust's Quality Improvement team that we're a bit stuck on:

An orthopaedic surgeon at our Trust would like to publish a paper about a quality improvement project his team has been involved in. He has asked for recommendations about where he might be able to publish this Q.I. report. He has investigated BMJ Quality Improvement Reports, but baulked at the £450 publication fee.

Does anyone have any suggestions for appropriate journals, or strategies for identifying possible journals of interest? Any help would be much appreciated!

Many thanks,

Katie
