Dear All,

I have been watching the various comments that have been batted backwards and forwards, about the idea of a history trail using the Pokemon Go game. I suspect a substantial numbers of the players would not have considered going to the individual sites of their own volition before the game became available. No doubt some will be so engrossed in the game that they will not pick up on the history of the site, but given a photo of the Poke-stop and a short history of the site can be up loaded when the ‘stop’ is established, many will learn something about the location while playing; consequently, the game can be seen as a way to of sowing the seeds of future interest, knowledge, familiarity, value, and a sense of place. It is important not to trivialise the game, the heritage community should view it as another tool, a means to an end, the game is played by children, teenagers and adults, and if it draw a new audience to a historic site and increases awareness, it is all to the greater good.

Subject: Worcester City Go History Trail

Dear all,

You may be interested to read of a short project I’ve put together, engaging local people who are using the Pokemon Go app with the historic sites that they are visiting.  As a model for engagement it’s been really quick and simple to put together (just a day or so of my time, some printer ink and a bit of space on a council-run website), but taps in to a whole new audience who are already visiting the sites in question.  I’ve attached a copy of one of the QR code posters as an example – feel free to scan the code using your smart phones to get the full detail of that particular ‘PokeStop’!
