Marine Data Specialist

Starting salary £27,066 per annum

JNCC is seeking a data scientist/engineer with solid skills in spatial data manipulation. The Marine Data Specialist will be based within the Marine Evidence Team and will contribute to JNCC's work to deliver robust evidence for conservation advice. The work of the Marine Evidence Team is cross-cutting and the post holder will act as a key liaison between this team and others within JNCC with regards to marine data.

The post-holder will have overall responsibility for identifying issues with marine data holdings and finding novel solutions, including the establishment of efficient processing chains in a scripting language such as R, placing data in suitable repositories, and ensuring data holdings have adequate metadata in line with relevant standards and are stored in standard/agreed formats. They will also support the Marine Evidence Team with data processing and analysis. This will require candidates with the ability to: manage complex and large datasets; design and use relational databases; manipulate, interpret and map datasets and spatial databases within GIS packages, and; manipulate data using R or a similar scripting language.

Furthermore, the role requires strong communication skills in order to provide support and advice to staff on marine data management and manipulation, and to share knowledge with internal and external customers on the best use of JNCC's marine data.

The post is based in Peterborough and will be offered on a permanent basis. Staff receive 25 days annual leave per year (rising to 30 days after 5 years service) and 12 days public and privilege leave. Flexi time is also available.
