Having just read the FAZ article about Humanities in Britain thanks to Henrike Laehnemann, I am reminded not for the first time of an incident recorded in Carola Stern's biography of Walter Ulbricht. On seeing a painting not to his taste he is reported to have asked, 'Wie nützt dieses Bild der Arbeiterklasse?' Was this statement, seen by Stern as hopeless philistinism, not a demand for impact, albeit of a different kind? Stuart Parkes (Emeritus Professor)
