Concept and Rationale:
Dr Elee Kirk, a graduate of the PhD programme in the School of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester, a researcher with RCMG (Research Centre for Museums and Galleries) and the School of Law at the University of Leicester, Senior Lecturer in Museum Education at UCL, and active member of GEM (Group for Education in Museums) and Kids in Museums, passed away too soon on August 1, 2016. As it became clear that her illness was terminal, Dr Kirk remained committed to disseminating her research, including at a Doctoral Inaugural Lecture at the University of Leicester in May 2016. It is in the spirit of celebrating and continuing her pioneering work in science education for young children that this peer-reviewed special issue of Museum & Society will be published in November 2017. The aim is to further the work that she did, and actively engage academics and museum professionals in the wide-reaching themes which touch on her chosen fields of study.
We invite contributions that address two or more of the following themes:
● Young children and museum learning: engagement and research challenges
● Science education in museums: livening up natural history, medicine, science and technology
● Irreverence as a research strategy: subverting established techniques and methodologies through inter/multi/transdisciplinary collaboration
● Research for education: the value of practice-based research for different expertise areas and applications
● Photography and drawing as research tools: self-ethnography and visitor experience
In keeping with the spirit of Dr Kirk’s work, proposals featuring innovative methodologies and outcomes will be particularly welcomed. Abstracts will be peer-reviewed for alignment with the issue’s objectives before full papers are accepted.
Please send an abstract of 250 words and a brief biography (please note corresponding author for collaborative chapters) to the editors at [log in to unmask] by December 1, 2016. Submissions will be acknowledged, and authors will be informed by mid-January 2016.
