Thanks Darren,

I’d like to echo your opinion and add my own. There is nothing in Jo’s email to suggest she isn’t also asking for ideas internally, and nothing to suggest that she is relying on our responses to produce her programme. I’m sure she is capable of producing events on her own, but appealing to GEM is an added bonus!

The great thing about working in learning is that people are so often willing to share practice and help others learn from their experience.  The GEM list lets us do this when we have capacity to do so, dipping in and out of conversations depending on how much time we have.  We all try to go to conferences and visit other museums to learn from what each other are doing, but we can’t be at every conference or see every exhibit so the GEM list helps us connect in ways we can’t face-to-face.

Of course we have to be mindful of providing development opportunities for our staff and volunteers, but my experience is that people working in learning are very conscious of that.   GEM can be a place for healthy debate and the occasional moan about lack of resources, day-to-day challenges, etc… and yes it can be a prickly minefield! One person’s request for help could be viewed as a missed volunteer opportunity, just as another person’s volunteer opportunity could be viewed as unpaid work/a lost opportunity for a paid role.

We’ve all enjoyed a few colourful debates on GEM, but overall I find the group’s responses to be healthy, helpful and paired with useful advice… (though sometimes best taken with a grain of salt!)

In the past I’ve also appreciated people replying to me off-list when they have very specific questions or want to better understand the rationale of something I’ve shared on GEM. This is often led to really productive personal conversations, and means that main discussion list doesn’t get flooded.

Looking forward to more group conversations and constructive peer-to-peer support!

- C

Hmmm personally I don't see the problem in Josephine looking to others in the group for ideas and support. This in my view, is one of the reasons for the group. Asking for ideas should not automatically be assumed to be for lack of effort, we all started off inexperienced and benefitted from the advice of others who gave this selflessly. If anyone doesn't want to share ideas for whatever reason, such as justifiably wanting to try them out first, well just don't. If stakeholder engagement is identified as the best way forward, then suggest doing so and if you have the benefit of experience, propose the best way to go about it. No need to drag anyone over the coals just for asking for ideas.

That's my opinion.

Darren

My opinion is that before approaching others for ideas, that she should work with those who knows the audience and the local needs rather than just making a presumption that other people will come up with the ideas. Simplicity and easiness are the reasons for the early planning, therefore, internal brainstorming seems the best strategy than relying on others who have yet to think about their own museum plans.

This is my opinion.

Shouldn't this be an internal team exercise? - an opportunity for your own collleagues and volunteers to make contributions rather than relying on staff and volunteers who don't work for your museum and might want to use their own ideas first before sharing? There's a chance for professional development.

Good Afternoon Everyone,

Yes I know Easter is not until next April.  However we are already planning our publicity for the next few months and Easter will feature in it.  So I need to think about ideas for engaging and creative activities exploring the traditions of the British Easter.  Any ideas?  Our ideal age range is 6+ yrs if that helps.

We normally combine our activities with a presentation of some kind and I need to keep it simple.
