I could refute all of your points but it would be nugatory to do so.

I'm with David on this one. It's no wonder academics are working 60+ hours per week if they have time to indulge in / impose this kind of nugatory discussion.

If one doesn't like a potential (secondary) employer's (entirely legitimate, if annoying) selection criteria - don't apply. We can chafe about the unfairness of it all we like - it's just shouting in an echo chamber.

For those of us who have spent most of our career outwith universities - this is completely a part of how the world works. I find it hard to believe that this is a recent phenomenon for the appointment of external examiner's and suchlike.

For our graduates, they're in a worse position because these sorts of criteria affect their ability to secure their first and main job.

The good news, someone will eventually give us that lucky break and acquire experience, whether that is as a result of responding to open adverts or from nurturing our personal networks.

Hi David

I quote from the JISC Mail site for this list "This list will provide a discussion forum for people interested in external examining issues". Though it has largely become a channel for advertising positions and it would seem like that is appropriate and useful. It is also appropriate and useful for people to engage in discussion and debate here as well.

All the best.

Hello.
With respect, this is a server for EE adverts. While I am interested in these kinds of questions and debates could you possibly create or suggest an alternative online space for them? At the moment it feels an imposition to receive these emails.
Thank you.
David.

...oh, the stupidity in adverts for EE posts can have additional stupidities - there was an advert here recently for an EE requiring applicants to have a PhD! That was for an EE of regular programmes, not for appointment as a PhD examiner - how stupid is that? How on earth can the D-Level descriptors have any impact on competence to be an external examiner? - and that advert was from a university which of all entities should understand how incredibly narrow some PhDs are and the set of transferable skills in the D-Level descriptors is the narrowest set of transferable skills in all the level descriptors......I really worry about academics or academic managers who write adverts containing requirements like that.....!

Which came first the chicken or the egg?

The UCU boycott aside, the insane logic of needing to have experience before being allowed to apply is stupidity at its most inane.

Even a trained monkey could work that one out.
